Wound, Tissues, and Aspirates Manual
This section includes specimens from decubitus ulcers, episiotomies,
non-intravenous or central line exit sites, chest tube drainage,
abdominal drainage, and tracheal swabs. Many different bacterial
species can cause infection of these sites. The presence of squamous
epithelial cells may indicate that the specimen is superficial
and therefore the organism isolated may not reflect the true etiology
of the infection.
