The research activities of the department
are diverse. Interdisciplinary research is being conducted in areas
of basic science, population-based epidemiology and clinically-oriented
health care research. Successful collaborations with local, national,
international clinicians, laboratories, and scientists have led
to many advances in our knowledge regarding bacterial and viral

Our department believes in sharing
information and knowledge with other healthcare professionals and
members of the general public. We have collected our educational
resources in this section to assist others in improving the quality
of patient care and clinical services. These resources include image
galleries, frequently asked questions,
and multimedia presentations.

The Infection Control division at
MSH is a recognized leader in its field. Team members are expert
consultants on the management of nosocomial outbreaks, the detection,
identification and transmission of antibiotic resistant organisms
and provides typing of isolates to support outbreak investigations.
Team members are active in local, national and international programs.

We are the largest and most influential
hospital-based microbiology lab in Canada. As an innovation driven
team, we are able to offer clients the full range of high quality
microbiology services from routine cultures and sensitivities to
the molecular typing of organisms. New assays are continually being
developed by our medical and scientific staff in response to the
clinical and research needs of clients.
